VAN GOGH
Van Gogh is probably, like many others, one of my favourite painters. His distinct brush strokes and repetitive use of blues and yellows makes his work recognisable to anyone. While i love the techniques used in Starry Night, the continuous swirl of tiny brushtrokes and beautiful colours, it's his portraits and sketches i am more interested in. It's interesting to see how his sketches and pencil marks show the same technique as his paintings. However the lines in his sketches look quicker and more expressive, while when using paint they look intricate and purposely placed. His portrait sketches show more clearly his style and skill, This must show that without us realising, the strong use of colours distracts us from seeing the actual shape and perspective of his subjects. While his work has heavily influenced many other artists, no one else has been able to capture the same emotion as Van Gogh does with his work.
