ALVIN CHONG

Alvin Chong is an up and coming artist and tattooist who uses social media, particularly Instagram, to showcase his art. Unlike my other chosen artists his medium of choice is pencil and pen. His style is always evolving and improving and with the help of Instagram you can see his work from the beginning up to now. Particuarlly in his sketch above, his sketches remind me of Van Gogh's drawings, The singular striking lines and blunt shading around the hair line and jaw are similar to that of Gogh's. He tends to focus his drawing around the face and avoids filling in the subjects hair in most of his sketches, something which I find myself doing a lot. With using pen's in his work, it produces a raw, expressive look as you can see every single line and every mistake he has made as he can't redo them. Alvin Chong also occasionaly uploads videos to his social media platforms of him drawing, where you can clearly see his techniques. What I found was suprising is how much time he takes in little sections of his portraits, as his sketches look energetic and lively I imagined rapid strokes quickly building up. His work shows just how much detail you can get from paper and pen.
