ALICE X ZHANG

Zhang's work primarily focuses around her interest in film and pop culture, Her pieces are not just used with one medium, her prints range from water colour, pencil, acrylic and digital illustration. I enjoy the colour palette/ scheme in each of her pieces. In the above image, 'Amy', the cool tones of blue and firey reds compliment the warmer tones of orange and yellow, giving more tone and depth to the portrait. I like the composition of her pieces and the strong contrast she uses with colours to create light and dark patterns, the placement of colour helps to form an emotional aura to the paintings, in particular the image above, to me, has a sad/angry ambience about it. The cool blur of blues and fiery stripes of red and orange seem to compliment yet battle eachother, it isn't a happy, light feeling painting.

I like all aspects of Alice X Zhang's work, both her portrait pieces and actual film scene pieces. I really enjoy how paintings can convey a film scene in a different way. It's hard to capture emotion in a film still, so it's especially captivating when you can find an artist who can get across the emotion and movement in a painting. I am influenced in Alice Zhang in the sense that i want to be able to paint a character from a movie and be able to see the emotion in the painting as you can in the actual film.
