DAVID PADWORNY
Based in New York, David Padworny who is known for his expressionist style portraits. His work is often oil paint on canvas and he paints in big expressive strokes with very thick layers of paint. On most of his portrait paintings, the paint thickens on the outside of the canvas, so much that you can't normally see the shape of the canvas which I really like. The paint is still very thick on the face, but the brush strokes are smaller and more precise to create the details in the face. Work like this inspired me to create a canvas piece of Judy Garland. With this style of painting I like how from a distance it's still very formed and you can see what the image is, but you can get close to it and begin to concentrate more on each brush stroke and not just the subject. Not every application is the same, each brush stroke has different colours mixed in and it gives the painting more character.
