LAING GALLERY
The Laing Gallery were exhibiting a wide range of work on my visit, from contemporary, modern artists like Glenn Brown to Pre-Raphaelite painter Charles William Mitchell. Personally, I always like to see the huge, classic portrait oil paintings in galleries as I think while in pictures they, to me, look quite dull in person you can appreciate the time they took on the painting. I love how you can see how the oil paint blends together and the detail in every inch of the painting. Paul Nash's work is currently exhibiting across two rooms in the Laing Gallery and while I don't particyarly like his work, I really enjoyed studying his work; his thin application of paint meant you could see the start of his work, his pencil outlines and first initial layers of paint helped me to understand how he decided to build his work up. Seeing artists work up close is always a unique experience no matter what you think of the piece.
